Monster Jam 2018 Debuting 7 New Trucks in Anaheim + Highlights from Sat, Jan 13th!

MONSTER JAM is back in Orange County and the Trucks are revving it up to battle it out at the Angel’s Stadium in Anaheim. This event is action-packed with crazy stunt driving, two wheelie competitions, freestyle, and terrain racing. We went last Saturday as media and were stoked to see some of our favorite trucks compete Live! There are three Saturday events left in their Anaheim tour PLUS for the first time, they added a fifth event and it’s on Sunday, February 25th. Monster Jam is one of the only sports where male and female world-class drivers are equals competing for the same championship on the same track. New in 2018, fans in every city will have the chance to vote for the trucks by real-time on their smartphones!

Monster Jam Trucks Anaheim Racing 2018

New Debuts for 2018!

This year’s truck lineup features appearances by super-truck icons Grave Digger and MAX-D, along with World Finals Champions El Toro Loco, Son Uva Digger, Overkill Evolution, Avenger, Bounty Hunter and VP Racing Fuel’s Mad Scientist. The season is highlighted by seven trucks making their Anaheim debut appearances including all-new 2018 season trucks BroDozer (inspired by the popular Discovery Channel TV show “Diesel Brothers”), Whiplash, Mutant, Rammuntion, Hotsy and Black Pearl plus the newest member of the Monster Jam family – the menacing giant shark Megalodon.

Highlights from Anaheim January 13, 2018

The night started out strong as fourteen vehicles went head-to-head against the clock in the RACING qualification. One-by-one, they narrowed it down to best four to go to the semi-finals, then they have best two go for the title. Mohawk Warrior defeated Grave Digger and Max-D defeated Megalodon. In the Finals, Grave Digger defeated Whiplash (Mohawk Warrior could not get back together in time for the Racing Final, so Grave Digger came back. Max-D could not get back together in time for the Racing Final, so Whiplash came back over Megalodon because Megalodon did not finish his race.) The show is always high-energy and unpredictable. The crowd always get excited when someone rolls over, and we love it when they “power out” to recover (when they use a burst of acceleration to keep from rolling over.) It’s stunt driving at its best!

Best five results for TWO-WHEEL SKILLS:

  • Grave Digger 9.670
  • Monster Mutt Rottweiler 8.798
  • Big Kahuna 8.460
  • Mutant 7.914
  • Megalodon 7.840

Always saving the best for last, our favorite part of the event is in the FREESTYLE COMPETITION. We all anticipate backflips, but it is hard to do, they all don’t attempt it, and they all don’t land it. This is where they show off, and of course, some are better than others. We really don’t know what will happen. Sometimes their wheels comes off, their car catches fire, they crash into the walls, or it looks like they’re going to roll over but as long as their engine doesn’t die, they keep going. We all thought MAX-D or Grave Digger was going to win it, because they always land their flips, but Avenger defeated them both and the crowd went wild!

My TIPS:

  1. Bring noise cancelling headphones or ear plugs. The engines revving are quite LOUD. Protect your ears and your family’s. We found some inexpensive ones at Harbor Freight but we have also used our ear pods with the rubbers on them.
  2. Closer is not always better. We have had seats on both lower and upper levels, we have fun every time, but you can’t see the whole track when you are on the lower levels.
  3. Know before you go! They do not have the same trucks at every event. Check out the line-up beforehand especially if you want to see your favorites.
  4. Look up community Meet-and-Greets before the show. You might get to see your favorite trucks up close locally without having to purchase a pit pass. Photo below was from two years ago when Max-D was at a Jiffy Lube in Orange.

It is our fourth year covering MONSTER JAM and we always have a blast! They change out the trucks at every event so you’ll want to check their tour schedule. If you want to meet the trucks and drivers, they have Pit Parties before each event for an additional fee. New this year, they are offering early access pit party passes. I also recommend bringing something to protect your ears. Bring noise cancelling headphones or earplugs. I found some very inexpensive noise reduction earmuffs for the children at Harbor Freight in the safety section for $2.99. They have other options available too. We didn’t have any problems bringing in our DSLR’s but you’ll need a zoom lens to capture close-ups of cars in the air.

Have fun!

Driver Safety

You might be wondering about the safety of the drivers. The Monster Jam trucks are designed to protect the driver at all times. A specially-constructed roll cage is built to house the driver, who is often sitting directly in the middle. Specially constructed seats that mold to the driver’s shape allow the work to be done with minimal distraction. A five-point harness is mounted securely to the truck to help hold the driver in position. The truck includes a receiver for a Remote Ignition Interrupter (RII). A signal can be transmitted to the truck by way of a special radio, which will shut off the engine. Each truck has a secondary on-off switch located at the rear on the frame. Other safety features are designed, built and mandated to keep the truck safe and operational. Each driver is equipped with specified safety gear, starting with the custom fitted fire resistant driving suit. The suits offer a minimum of three layers of protection. The helmet meets Snell Foundation regulations for fire-resistance while serving as part of the head-and-neck restraint system, which includes a tested and approval harness system. The drivers’ hands are protected by flame-resistant gloves which have a tacky grip side for steering wheel control. The drivers’ feet are protected by special fire resistant shoes that also include a thin sole for optimal throttle and brake control.
