I sent my friend Jaime to Epic Media Day yesterday at Fox and this is what she reported…
Have your family seen Epic? We did, and my kids are excited it’s out on DVD/Blu-Ray so we can see it again! Yesterday we went to a DVD release party at Fox Plaza to get a behind-the-scenes tour of some of the bugs that inspired the characters in Epic!
Can you find the Walking Stick in this picture? He was one of the characters in Epic!
Ken “The Bug Guy” from Tuscon’s Exotic Pet Shop in Arizona was the expert who advised on the film. He was on hand to show us some of his bugs!
In this picture, Ken is showing us a Vinegar Roon, which we were allowed to pet. Ken The Bug Guy is featured on the Blu-Ray in a special bonus piece, “Bugs of Camouflage.” The armor of the Leafmen in the film is based off bug exoskeletons. They are different colors to blend into different environments.
He also showed us some of his other bugs. This is an Arizona Blond, which is a type of tarantula. Tarantulas are the biggest species of bug to collect. There are over 100 types!
One of the coolest features of the emperor scorpions we saw is their ability to glow under this black light. This is a defense mechanism to keep them safe. When they crawl out of their burrows at night, if the moon is too bright they can see themselves and know it’s not safe to be out.
My kids were thrilled to take home these figurines from the movie! Now they can act out their favorite parts of Epic whenever they want!
