A friend and I went to media night of PIPPIN at Segerstrom Center for the Arts this week. We both love theater so this was a real treat for both of us as a night out.
Pippin (Kyle Dean Massey) is a Prince who is determined to find the meaning of his life, but it’s not all what he thinks it should be, because after he gets what he wants, he is still left empty and unfulfilled. His Grandma aka Berth (Lucie Arnaz) tells him that he thinks too much and he should live in the moment. What’s interesting about the performance is that it’s a show within a show, and the Narrator (Leading Player: Sasha Allen) talks directly to us. Also, the performers are not just singing and dancing, they’re athletic and acrobatic! It’s like a musical and circus all-in-one. It was really exciting to watch!
We thought Leading Player (Sasha Allen) is a strong performer. She’s funny, sings and dances well. You might hate her at the end though because of her character. =) Berth (Lucie Arnaz) is hilarious! We loved the part when she had us singing chorus. LOL
Hint: Don’t be late coming back from intermission – they have a surprise performance while the lights are still on!
We really enjoyed this performance. It was not only funny, the performers and their stunts were amazing. The adult scenes were creatively written and performed, and the ending message is strong. PIPPIN is recommended for ages 13+ because of mild violence, mature themes, and dialogue. For more information about PIPPIN, please visit their website at www.PippinTheMusical.com.
