Segerstrom Center: School of Rock Musical

Spread the love

Fifteen years ago, School of Rock won over audiences with its comedic, heartwarming story about a struggling guitarist-turned music teacher. The film starred Jack Black and Joan Cusack and was the highest grossing music-themed comedy at that time. Twelve years later, renowned composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, Glenn Slater, and Julian Fellowes adapted the film into a Broadway musical. “School of Rock – The Musical” will perform at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts July 24 through August 5, 2018.

School of Rock – The Musical

The musical is based on the film and follows the story of Dewey Finn, an aspiring rock star who’s financial turmoil compels him to pose as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. What he lacks in academic instruction he makes up for in bringing out his classroom’s musical talents. Finn succeeds in turning his class of honor-roll students into an impressive rock band, but not everyone is onboard with his fraudulent actions. When the parents discover that their kids have been schooled in rock music, they threaten the students’ upcoming performance in the Battle of the Bands.

“School of Rock – The Musical” features all of the original songs from the film in addition to 14 new songs written by Andrew Lloyd Weber for the show. Also noteworthy is the fact that the show includes musical theater’s first-ever all-kids rock band where the students play the instruments, sing, and dance.
