One of the activities that we absolutely love to do together as a family on Catalina Island is a round of miniature golf at GOLF GARDENS. It’s inexpensive and fun for all ages. You can easily spend a good hour to two hours here. Four years ago, we introduced the children to mini-golf right here, and ever since then, it has become a tradition on the island!
When my kids were much younger, I appreciated that the area was enclosed and fenced off so if they ran ahead of me, I could still see that they were safe. They didn’t necessarily follow the rules, sometimes they held the clubs upside down, and didn’t putt very well, but they have great fun, and it’s a nice way for the boys to bond with their Dad. Every time we go back, the children get excited because they remember coming here, and every time they try to do better. One of my readers told us they remember coming here as kids, and it has been here a long time – nearly 40 years!
The 18-hold course is challenging and nicely kept by the Santa Catalina Island Company. It is in a garden setting. Parts of the course is shaded and scenic. It is located one block from the beach. Par for the course is 51 and the official record is 41. The Eagle is the last hole, and it keeps your ball. My kids are always disappointed when it is over. Golf Gardens main entrance is located on Sumner Avenue just past the Discover Plaza, across the street from the City Library. Golf Gardens is open every day, year-round, weather permitting from 9:00am to 5:00pm Sunday through Friday (last tee is at 4:00 pm), and Saturdays from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm (last tee at 7:00 pm).
