Based on the hit DreamWorks film, the first national tour of the high-flying Broadway musical CATCH ME IF YOU CAN is coming to Orange County at Segerstrom Center for the Arts for a limited engagement June 25 – 30. CATCH ME IF YOU CAN is based on Frank Abagnale’s The New York Times bestselling autobiography, published by Broadway Paperbacks, and the hit 2002 film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg with screenplay by Jeff Nathanson and book by Frank Abagnale, Jr.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN retells a true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr., a world-class con artist who passed himself off as a doctor, a lawyer and a jet pilot — all before the age of 21. With straight-arrow FBI agent Carl Hanratty on Frank’s trail, we’re off on a jet-setting, cat-and-mouse chase, as a jazzy, swinging-sixties score keeps this adventure in constant motion. In the end, Agent Hanratty learns he and Frank aren’t so very different after all and Frank finds out what happens when love catches up to a man on the run.
Nominated for four Tony Awards® and six Drama Desk Awards, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN features a Tony Award-winning creative team, with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime), an irresistible score by Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman (Hairspray), choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, Legally Blonde) and direction by Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels).
Scenic design for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN is by David Rockwell (Hairspray), costume design is by five- time Tony Award winner William Ivey Long (The Producers), lighting design is by Tony Award winner Kenneth Posner (Wicked) and sound design is by Peter McBoyle.
The New York Times exclaims, “Hot diggity! This portrait of the con artist as a young man comes to ecstatic life.”
“Catch Me If You Can” was truly an enjoyable experience! I was skeptical at first and unsure of how this amazing story could transform on stage into a Broadway hit, but I must admit that this musical adaptation from the storyline was impressive, and I liked it better than the movie (2002 Steven Spielberg movie adaptation). The show was able to capture the true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr., who, all before his 21st birthday, successfully performed cons worth millions of dollars through writing fraudulent checks, by posing as a Pan American World Airways jet pilot, a Georgia pediatric doctor, and a Louisiana attorney. Everything was amazing – acting, vocal, costume, dance, music, and overall staging. From start to finish, the cast delivered an incredibly high energy Broadway performance. It was definitely very fun and entertaining to watch! Great show for a Girls Night Out (GNO) although my husband would thoroughly enjoy this as well for a Date Night. TIP: I suggest catching dinner beforehand and arriving early for it’s pre-show activities which was pleasantly entertaining and interactive. If you’re a true Broadway musical fan, this is the show for you!
