“Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty!” Matilda declares as she tries to right injustice and fight for the underdog when things aren’t fair. Matilda, based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, is a spunky, innovative, and exciting musical that proves you don’t have to be big to fight for what is right and that a little magic goes a long way. While all the children around her are loved and treated like miracles, Matilda, who truly is an amazing miracle, is stuck with the worst self-absorbed parents on the planet! She continually has to remind her awful father that she’s a girl and stay out of the way of a mother that never really wanted her.

The explosion of Scrabble tiles and alphabet block that make up the set design is whimsical and pair perfectly with Matilda and her gift of reading “big books” before she even goes to school. The choreography is dazzling and exciting. I was so impressed with the all the children in the show and how they are able to perform the chorus numbers with drill-team like precision. The lighting is flashy and explosive, so if you’re prone photosensitive seizures, be prepared to cover your eyes and wait the flashes and strobes out.

Matilda is sassy, quick-witted, and a little bit naughty – just like my youngest – and that’s probably why I loved it so much! If you’re looking for a family-friendly musical that everyone in the family will love, Matilda is a sure thing. We’ll be singing “When I Grow Up” and “Naughty” for weeks to come and having the strange feeling that we should be eating chocolate every day.
