Segerstrom Center Family Series Review – SHADOW PLAY

Did you know that Segerstrom Center of the Arts has a Family Series? It is a great way to share the love of theater with your children! On November 17, 2018, my family and I attended the family-friendly showing of “Shadow Play” presented at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The show follows Flash and his playful shadow through adventures to the moon and back.  The video production was clever and the performer’s interaction with the audience did a great job in capturing the attention of both kids and adults. While the performance on the stage was probably what the kids will remember the most, the atmosphere and the compassion from the employees is what made the experience memorable for me. Segerstrom also have select shows that are Sensory-Friendly.  I have a son on the autism spectrum and being able to attend a live performance as a family is rare.  Because we weren’t able to make it for the Sensory Friendly showing I was concerned that going to the regular showing would be a challenge for us.  However, from the moment we arrived at the Samueli Theater, the employees made sure the families were comfortable.  I was distraught because I had forgotten to bring my son’s sound reducing head phones.  When I mentioned this to one of the workers at the crafts table, she immediately understood my concern and found a pair leftover from the Sensory Showing earlier that day.  Without them, I’m sure we would have had to all go home.

STORY LINE:

Have you ever wondered what happens to your shadow when you go to sleep? It turns out that some shadows have lives of their own – some are more mischievous than others.  Watch one boy’s clever shadow come to life in “Shadow Play” at Segerstrom Center for the Arts! This interactive and immersive theater experience by New York’s Trusty Sidekick Theater Company is presented through the Center’s Education Department and is part of the Center’s Family Series. Each production is designed to inspire young imaginations and create a life-long interest and appreciation for live theater. Shadow Play is ideal for children 5-8 years old and their families.

Performances of Shadow Play are Saturday, November 17 at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Samueli Theater. The Saturday, November 17 performance at 10:00 a.m. is a sensory-friendly performance designed for children on the autism spectrum or others with sensory sensitivity to enjoy fully the magic and amazement of live performances. The Sunday, November 18 performance at 1:00 p.m. will be ASL interpreted.

2018-2019 FAMILY SERIES

Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ fun-packed 2018 – 2019 Family Series is guaranteed to entertain, inspire and – just be a whole lot of fun! Many of these internationally renowned theater companies are returning by popular demand with new shows and casts of characters. New this year is a concert by the Latin Grammy Award-winning indie pop-rock Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band. The Discovery Series is perfect for children ages 4 – 8 and the Explorer Series has been designed for children ages 7 and older. (But kids of all ages and their parents too will have a blast.) Each show is an adventure in storytelling, creativity and theatrical magic that will pique young imaginations and engage families with marvelous tales from around the world. Each performance also features free pre-show family activities. All performances will be in Segerstrom Center’s Samueli Theater except Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which will be in Segerstrom Hall.

The performance of “Shadow Play” on November 17, 2018 at 10 a.m. and of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” & Other Eric Carle Favorites on February 2, 2019 at 10 a.m. are sensory-friendly performances designed specifically so families with children with sensory sensitivity can share the magic and amazement of live performances. These performances may be purchased together as a separate subscription. All engagements will offer sign-language interpretation at one performance to assist the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
