I was invited to a tasting event at Gaufree (pronounced Go Free) in Irvine. Being an Irvine resident, I was excited to try a new place out for lunch, especially one that served local, farm fresh, and organic produce.
I ordered the organic buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, homemade pure cane sugar natural lemonade, and for dessert – the Brussels Street waffle with chocolate sauce and raspberry Coulis.
Although their specialty is the homemade waffle, they also offer “anti-waffle” options of their waffle sandwiches on a pretzel bun, lettuce wrap, or gluten free waffle.
It’s Fresh! From the first bite of my sandwich, it was easy to tell that the ingredients were fresh and healthy. The fried chicken sandwich was tasty and not oily. I’m not a big fan of sauce in my sandwiches, but the fried chicken sandwich had a subtle Meyer’s Rum chipotle molasses dip that didn’t over power the taste of the chicken and waffle.
The dessert waffle was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not too sweet. The sauces were served in a small dish on the side allowing for easy dipping. I love that the drinks are made from cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

The best part of the lunch was the customer service. The staff at the event was so accommodating and friendly. Indoor and outdoor seating are available. PLUS it’s dog-friendly! (They have a water bowl for your dog right outside their store.) I’m looking forward to coming back to try their ice cream and cappuccino bar in the back.
