Nintendo Switch Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Do you remember playing the earlier versions of Donkey Kong? (Jumping over barrels and collecting bananas?) We received a copy of the new Donkey Kong Country – Tropical Freeze game for Nintendo Switch to review. Playing Donkey Kong with my kids has brought back so many fond memories of the game. I loved the original, and it is actually still one of my favorite of all times. In this version you can play up to to two players. There are no timers, but you’re still looking for hidden treasure and the stages get more and more challenging. My kids and I can spend hours finding all the hidden features. I always aim for perfection, because I know that it will unlock more hidden stages. The graphics are beautiful, the challenges are hard but achievable. I even like the different music selections.

Strategy

My kids play to get through the game is quickly as possible, but I like to keep playing the stage over and over until I have found all the hidden puzzle pieces and collect all the letters. It not only unlocks hidden stages, I have found that it is the easiest way to stockpile lives and collect coins to use it when we need it most – defeating “The Boss”.

New Funky Mode

When you’re in Funky Mode, you can’t get hurt from the spikes on the ground because hello, you travel with a cool surf board! When you’re falling, it “helicopters” your fall which helps you coast your landing.

“For a more accessible experience, start a game in Funky Mode to enjoy a range of gameplay updates and a new main-character option, spectacular surfing simian Funky Kong! His extra hearts and unique abilities make for a more relaxed gaming experience. And no matter which mode you choose, a wealth of collectibles and two-player co-op round out the fun!”

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re playing it for the first time or playing because you’re a fan, Donkey Kong Country will take you on a new endless adventure that you’ll want to keep playing. Add this to your games to play if you have a Nintendo Switch. I thought it was challenging to play with two players unless you communicate with each other. Parts of the game, we agreed to switch over to single player. It’s not possible to play this game quietly unless you’re playing by yourself.
