Pappy’s Seafood Restaurant in Historical Downtown San Pedro

Pappy’s Seafood recently opened up in San Pedro. You might know their sister restaurant, The Albright, which is located on the Santa Monica Pier.  We visited about a month ago for a menu tasting, and the best way I can describe it is – they’re a full service fish-and-chips place but better! Pappy’s includes sustainable and local seafood, sourced fresh from the Port of Los Angeles. You’ll find dishes like tacos with scratch-made tortillas, fish plates, salads, appetizers like lobster mac and cheese (yummy) and a shrimp cake slider. They also have sandwiches like lobster roll (my favorite!), shrimp po’ boy, tuna melts, and burgers. They even have a kid’s menu. If you’re in the area and looking for good seafood that’s reasonably priced, they’re located in historic downtown San Pedro. They’re not in Orange County but hopefully, they will make their way down this way eventually. Here are some things that we got to try…

Clam Chowder

New England Style Clam Chowder in a Sourdough Bread Bowl. It’s also available in a cup size. For another soup option, they have Brazilian Moqueca Stew.

Lobster Mac and 5 Cheese!

I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this dish. Getting it with lobster is additional, but just the mac and cheese by itself is delicious! The sauce is creamy and the panko parmesan crust adds a nice texture. Other starter items on the menu – fried calamari, crab & artichoke dip, hush puppies, crab cakes, shrimp cake slider, stuffed clams, ceviche, raw oysters, and Pappy’s fries.

California Cobb Salad

Need fresh greens with your meal? I ordered their California Cobb Salad, and it came out entree size. It’s very large! Perfect for sharing, it comes with thick-cut bacon, Pappy’s seasoning grilled shrimp, avocado, hard boiled egg, cherry tomato, feta and balsamic vinaigrette.

Fish Plate

Their fish plates come with a choice of salad and rice or potatoes. Select from Sea Bass, Ahi, Shrimp, Salmon, or Mahi Mahi. Then pick how you want it prepared – garlic herb butter, chimichurri, or blackened seasoning (pictured). Optional side dish upgrades: grilled veggies, coleslaw, black beans, orzo pasta, corn succotash.

Kids Menu

They have mini-bowls for children. They pick the protein (chicken, steak, or fish) and it comes with rice. It didn’t say it on the menu but it had black beans in it so my son ate around it. They also have fish & chips, chicken tenders & fries, corn dog bites & fries, and cheese quesadilla.

“Influenced by the mix of San Pedro’s new and old cultures, Pappy’s décor pays homage to the city’s vintage L.A. roots. Working with architect David Alvarez and Undefeated founder, James Bond, alongside the Papadakis family, the Morena’s celebrated the motley heritage of the historic structure through the new design, creating a classic, seaside atmosphere. The space features a nautical navy and brass color scheme with a generous dose of natural light from two walls of classic architecture. While preserving the original bones of the restaurant, the Morena’s raised the ceiling to expose clerestory windows and uncovered antique brick, concrete columns, and the original entrance doors, all of which had been covered up for over 70 years.”
