It has been about two months since we tried Mathnasium – The Math Learning Center in Laguna Niguel. My son who has special needs is in Gen Ed this year for 5th Grade and although I know he may or may never catch up, Math is his strength. What is holding him back is reading and comprehension so he struggles with word problems. It is hard for me to gauge how he is doing and where he needs to be, but as long as he is learning that is all that matters to me. I wanted to try Mathnasium to see if they can help close some of those learning … READ MORE >>
One of my boys struggle with reading and comprehension in general which makes it difficult for him to solve math word problems. He has an IEP, and I love his teachers this year, but there is only so much they can do in the classroom. I have partnered up with MATHNASIUM in Laguna Niguel for two months to see if they can help close some of the gaps. What I have seen so far has been impressive. As a learning center, their objectives are to uncover and address the gaps in the student’s knowledge. They hope to build self-confidence and self-esteem in the children. They want to teach it in a way that will make sense for them, and they want to help the children strengthen their math skills. The groups are kept small and the children are rewarded for their efforts. If they accumulate enough points, they spin a wheel at the end of the session for bonus points which are redeemable for prizes. My son looks forward to going back bi-weekly.
Summer is ending and we will soon be back to busy, busy schedules when the children are back in school. Need some down time? Help ease the transition with Family Movie Nights! We love in-home family movie nights, because it gives us a chance to catch up on popular titles that we might have missed in theaters but now we can enjoy them in the comfort of our own home. In the past, we threw some really fun themed-parties thanks to being a part of the Fox Home Entertainment Insider program. The children enjoyed the film even more when we went that extra mile. Which leads us to this next blogiversary online party giveaway – one LET’S PLAY OC! reader will win this wonderful movie bundle! Enter below for a chance to win (1) copy of DreamWorks’ SHREK Anniversary Edition 4-Movie Collection in DVD, (1) copy of Tim Burton’s MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN in Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD, (1) copy of DreamWorks’ KUNG FU PANDA 3 in Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD, and (1) copy of Blue Sky’s THE PEANUTS MOVIE Collector’s Edition in Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD!
This month, we’re all gearing up for Back-To-School, and I’m working on a game plan so I don’t get anxieties this year. For example, I will try to avoid crowds by shopping early in the season and in the mornings. I’m already finding some good deals at the mall. This year I am “Pairing Up” with JCPenney! I like collaborating with JCPenney, because not only do I find affordable pieces and they have a great selection of licensed tees that we love, every year they roll out a program to help children in need. This year for two weeks (8/1 through 8/15), for every pack of socks or underwear sold, JCPenney will “Pair Up” and donate a pack to the Y to give to kids in need up to 750,000. What a great cause!
It is that time of year again to celebrate the wonderful educators in our lives. This year’s National Teacher Day is Tuesday, May 9, 2017. It is usually the Tuesday of the first full week in May. Some dedicated creative classroom moms will organize a week-long celebration to shower our beloved teachers together as a group with a set budget. Sometimes we are not so lucky and will have to figure it out on our own. I always have the hardest time finding a gift for the teachers and their assistants (we have a lot). They work really hard all year round with my children, and I never feel like what I give them is enough. If I could, I would give them more than a $5-$10 gift card per person (which easily ends up being around $100 for everyone in my case) – Yikes! If you ask most teachers, they will tell you it is the thought that counts, and they’ll appreciate anything, but I try not to give them something they can’t use. I like to be practical so here are my go-to gifts…
Sponsored content. All opinions are my own. We recently previewed this year’s Spring Collection at The Children’s Place. For the boys this year, layering is the key for both dressy and casual looks. We found licensed graphic tees (which we love), polo shirts in stripe and solids, shorts in plaids and solids, and we love it when their jeans go on sale. Here are some of our picks for boys for Spring Fashion this year that’s great for the playground or a day out with family and friends. Get This Look! In the first look, we layered a solid colored yellow polo shirt (a pop of color) with a t-shirt, … READ MORE >>
Disclosure: We received product samples. All opinions are our own. Lice is NASTY! (So we heard anyway). The other day at preschool there was a notice on the classroom door that our kid may have been exposed to it, and it was to inform us that they took precaution to clean everything thoroughly in the classroom. Whew, that was close, but what if next time we weren’t so lucky and our son brought it home with him? We can only imagine what a nightmare that will become. Recently we learned that there’s a new strain of lice — dubbed “super lice”— that is more resistant to over … READ MORE >>
If you want the on-the-go convenience of disposable food pouches without the waste and expense, check out this review of the Little Green Pouch! I sent a sample pack to my sister Kim who has a toddler and this is what she reported… My little one year old loves the food pouches filled with fruits and meals for stages 1 and 2. The pouches are most convenient when traveling. No need to pack a spoon or a bowl to feed the little tyke, because they just gobble it up straight from the pouch – how easy is that?! Depending on bulk or sale opportunities, each organic pouch runs about $1.50 … READ MORE >>
